Why wallet and browser?

Wallet and browsers are crucial for access to web3 activities such as buying and selling NFTs, swapping in DEX, participating in DeFi, and joining a DAO.

On-chain crypto wallet allows users to hold digital assets and prove their identities online. Browser is synced to this wallet, which acts as a gateway for users to transact and use dapps on the browser with their wallet assets and identities.

We launched MPC wallet and browser within Coinbase main app, allowing Coinbase users to access web3 via dapps(decentralized applications). This is a strategic bet and the company vision for Coinbase to be a platform leader in the web3 space. We’ve added a new tab at the bottom and built an entirely new experience for on-chain activities using the Dapp wallet, onboarding 20M existing Coinbase retail investors with a non-custodial wallet.

Two biggest pain points that we aimed to solve were around security and ease of use.

First, web3 wallet uses MPC (multi-party computational), which removes concept of seed phrases in a digital wallet. Conventional self-custody wallets (like MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet) makes users soley responsible for keeping their seed phases safe. Losing this means losing access to all your assets including NFTs and crypto. However, this wallet does not rely on a single source of key, therefore removes this burden from users. We’e added easy wallet recovery with Coinbase credentials.

Second, web3 wallet in Coinbase app reduces the steps to move funds during their web3 journey. This allows easy fiat-on-ramp to new users and eradicates cumbersome transfers between different apps.

With very little product announcement and promotion, we grew the wallet user from 0 to 3M wallets in 6 months.

Recently, we’ve renamed the tab to be called Web3 (from browser), which increased user engagement by 5%

Coinbase Wallet redesign (browser experience)

I participated in the redesign of the Coinbase Wallet app, as the design Point-of-contact for the browser experience. Wallet redesign and rewrite was a culmination of a strategic shift in priorities for making web3 front and center for Wallet.
