The Brief
Broadcasting live have various use cases that spans from big News publishers, game streamers on PC, to fashion creators speaking to their fans on their smartphones. I Served as design POC for Live Audio Room, Messenger Live Room, and unified co-broadcasting project. As lead designer, I worked with different partner team designers to bring cohesive and high-quality live rooms to Facebook, Messenger and Instagram.
With expertise in video calling, we support building cohesive broadcasters’ experience of Live Rooms in Meta.
We bridge gaps by introducing audio/video controls, Speaker Management and other accessibility features.
Type of Remote Presence
Virtual hangouts can vary in size of participants depending on its context and use cases. Co-broadcasting supports largest form of remote presence, as shown in the below diagram. As number of participants in grows, end-points of communication grow exponentially. Rooms need to be structured to allow organized method of communication. By creating roles and stages, Live Room Host can grant or take speaker’s ability to speak.
Roles and Formats of Co-broadcast
Co-broadcasting distinguishes stage and the audience. At any time listener/viewers are able to raise hand or be invited to come up to the stage to be a speaker. Host can invite or remove these speakers to remain full control of the performance. Formats of co-broadcast represent the modality of communication on how speakers are presented or interacting with the audience. (Live Audio Room or Live Video Room)
States of Live Room
Live Room can be triggered from 3 different events. A solo broadcast can invite speaker to make this into a Live Room. A listener/viewer may request to join the live as a speaker, making this into a live room. A closed Room can be broadcasted to Live.
Unified tech stack for calling provided many advantages such as faster product iterations, less maintenance cost, and cross-app communication. As the engineering teams invest in the unification, I worked with Facebook and Instagram Live designers to provide coherent and polished Live Room experience across the Family of Apps.
below are some sample projects that I’ve lead recently…

Be Heard: Bringing Social Audio Experiences to Facebook
Launched on June 2021. Below are product screen recordings.
I onboarded on to a virtual team to support the MVP launch of Live Audio Room as Lead designer. I brought context and knowledges on live room to address holistic experience and its edge cases including speaker invitation, rights management, accessibility and post-live experiences. As a lead design I worked with Live, Watch, Monetization, Public Figures, Groups team to reconcile and build MVP that met needs of each teams. As company’s first social audio product, Live Audio Room’s design principle set standard for many following initiatives such as Soundbites and Podcasts.
Live Room (Facebook — Messenger)
I worked on redesign of Live Producer (Desktop Web), to include core functionalities such as speaker invitation/removal, and Audio/Video controls. On Messenger side, when a person joins Live Room, they will join using Messenger web. The joined speaker will be able to see Live Comments in the room. The cross-app communication between Facebook and Messenger enables smooth host/speaker/viewer participation in co-broadcast .
Instagram Live Room
Live Room in Instagram launched, and we worked on redesign of host, speaker experience to enable audio/video controls, as well as speaker management setting for host. This was also a cross-app design collaboration to bring call control consistency.
Outcome…
This was huge project with lots of responsibilities and stakeholders across the company. I launched Live Audio Room and recorded Live Room. Live Audio Room was successfully launched in US with 100% rollout in end of H1. Recorded Live Room contributes to 10x the live room listeners as an evergreen content.
We’ve successfully added Audio/video control and speaker management to both Facebook and Instagram. We contributed to overall 10% increase in co-broadcast DAU in Instagram, Messenger and Facebook combined.
Live audio room has been removed from Facebook App since 2023, for shift in strategy within Meta.
